About Me
I currently hold the position of Assistant Professor within the Engineering Systems and Design Pillar (ESD) at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). Additionally, I serve as Deputy Director at the Aviation Studies Institute in SUTD, where I am engaged in diverse research projects in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (for more details, please refer to my Portfolio).
Before joining SUTD, I pursued my doctoral studies in Transport Systems at the University of Coimbra in Portugal. During this period, I also undertook visiting research appointments at renowned institutions such as MIT and Carnegie Mellon University.
My research primarily focuses on the application of operations research methodologies to enhance decision-making processes within transportation system management. I employ a range of techniques including mathematical programming, metaheuristics, simulation modeling, machine learning, and econometrics. Of particular interest to me is the integration of optimization methods with machine learning techniques. My research addresses various aspects of air transportation, with a specific emphasis on airport slot allocation and capacity declaration, passenger connectivity, air traffic management, resilient airspace operations, and the impact of convective weather on air traffic.

January 2026: Research Fellow Wayne Ng presented “Data-Driven Terminal Airspace Optimization with Environmental Considerations” at the AAAI-26 Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Air Transportation (AI4AT) in Singapore and received the Best Paper Award.
November 2025: Asst. Prof. Nuno Ribeiro participated as a panellist at Super Terminal Expo in Hong Kong in the roundtable “Rethinking Apron Efficiency for Faster Turnarounds”.
November 2025: Wayne Ng presented “An Optimization Approach for the Terminal Airspace Scheduling Problem” at the 65th AGIFORS Annual Symposium in London and received the Anna Valicek Silver Medal.

October 2025: Asst. Prof. Nuno Ribeiro and PhD student Marcus Koh presented four research works at the 2025 INFORMS Annual Meeting in Atlanta on terminal airspace scheduling, airport slot allocation, aircraft turnaround operations, and baggage and cargo transportation.
October 2025: The team received two awards from the INFORMS Air Transportation Section at the 2025 INFORMS Annual Meeting: Best Paper Award and Best Student Presentation Award, awarded to Wayne Ng’s work on terminal airspace scheduling and Marcus Koh’s work on aircraft turnaround operations, respectively.

July 2025: Asst. Prof. Nuno Ribeiro served as Air Transportation Cluster Chair at the 2025 INFORMS International Meeting in Singapore, organizing 11 sessions with 42 presentations. Nuno and members of his research group presented six works on airport capacity declaration, ASEAN air traffic flow management, terminal airspace optimization, convective weather, aircraft turnaround operations, and hub competition.

September 2024: The paper “Terminal Maneuvering Area Design Tool: Translational Research in Aviation”, by Peter Jackson and Asst. Prof. Nuno Ribeiro, was presented at the 5th Asia Pacific Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management in Tokyo, Japan.
July 2024: Asst. Prof. Nuno Ribeiro promoted to Deputy Director of the Aviation Studies Institute in SUTD. With this new appointment, Nuno will add to his duties to assist the Director of ASI in strategic planning, decision-making, and overall management of the institute.
July 2024: PhD student Wayne Ng delivers a presentation at the 27th ATRS World Conference in Lisbon, on “An Optimization Approach for Solving the Terminal Airspace Scheduling Problem”
July 2024: Asst. Prof. Nuno Ribeiro and PhD student Nutchanon Suvittawat presented two research papers at the 11th International Conference on Research in Air Transportation (ICRAT). The papers, titled “A Modeling Framework for Rapid Assessment of Terminal Airspace Configurations and Planning Scenarios” and “Aircraft Surface Defect Inspection System Using AI with UAVs”, were both accepted for the conference proceedings.
July 2024: Asst. Prof. Nuno Ribeiro delivered a guest lecture on “Slot Allocation Models” for the Air Transport Management Degree Programme’s ATM3307 Operations Research course at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT).
June 2024: Asst. Prof. Nuno Ribeiro visited the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and City University of Hong Kong (CityU). During his visit, he delivered two seminar talks entitled “From Predictive to Prescriptive Analytics in Airport Capacity Management” (PolyU link and CityU link). These visits have opened up potential collaborative research topics and opportunities for the exchange of students and researchers.
May 2024: Asst. Profs. Nuno Ribeiro and Karthyek Murthy have been awarded by the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers for their excellence in teaching Modeling & Simulation courses, specifically the 40.015 Simulation Modelling and Analysis course at SUTD.
March 2024: PhD student Wayne Ng delivers a presentation at the 5th SoAR Symposium in Luxembourg, on “Terminal Airspace Scheduling Optimization with Environmental Considerations”
March 2024: PhD student Wayne Ng is visiting the University of Bergamo for an external research period as part of his PhD program, under the framework of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by both institutions (SUTD and UniBG). During this time, Wayne will collaborate closely with Prof. Sebastian Birolini on research focused on optimizing terminal airspace operations to minimize fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
February 2024: The work carried out as part of the project on Resilient Airspace Operations for Singapore have been shortlisted for the prestigious ATM Awards 2023, standing alongside renowned industry entities such as Airways (New Zealand), ENAIR (Spain), ENAV (Italy), Eurocontrol Network Manager (Belgium) and the European Satellite Services Provider (France and Spain).
